In our weekly feature section, Pelvic Rehab Report is proud to present this interview with newly certified practitioner Catherine Neal, MSPT, PRPC
How did you get involved in the pelvic rehabilitation field?
I started in this field seven years ago when the pelvic therapist at the hospital moved and there was an opening. I was bored in the day rehab department where I was working and thought it would be an interesting change. Little did I know that I was going to find my true calling. I have loved every minute of this specialty! The complexity of this field is intriguing. And the ability to change people’s live is so rewarding!
Describe your clinical practice:
I opened my own practice last year, Core Therapy, in Savannah, GA and treat pelvic patients almost exclusively. I felt somewhat limited in my ability for personal and professional growth in the outpatient hospital setting where I worked and knew that this was the right decision for me. I rent a treatment room from a chiropractor and massage therapist to keep costs down while I’m getting started. Pelvic pain patients comprise about 75% of my patient population and the other 25% are bowel and bladder incontinence. I see about 25-30 patients a week.
What has been your favorite Herman & Wallace Course and why?
I have enjoyed all of the H&W courses, but feel that the series on visceral mobilization completely revolutionized my evaluations and treatments. The amount of knowledge that I gained from Ramona Horton was immeasurable. The first day back in the clinic, I had patients telling me that this was the first time anyone had addressed and helped them with their pain. It has opened up a whole new avenue of treatment options and I wish that I had taken theses courses earlier in my career. I would love to call some of my old patients and have give them a do-over.
What is in store for you in the future?
I look forward to growing this field in Savannah. I’m slowly but surely bringing awareness of the benefits of pelvic rehab to the area physicians and the public. . I was on the local morning show a couple of weeks ago talking about my practice and have been asked to speak at several women’s groups this summer. My patients have been phenomenal at marketing for me and bringing my literature to their doctors and friends. I’m hoping to expand the business this year, finding a larger location and bringing on another therapist by the end of the year or early next year and I hope to add wellness classes also.
